Great Horse Activities For Small Children

If you`re a horse lover you probably want your children to love horses too. Children who grow up with horse-lover parents sometimes learn to ride before they can even walk, but sometimes when children are very small you don’t necessary want to stick them up on a horse all by their self just yet. In this case, there are many other great horse activities for small children that can keep them engaged with horses and learn about them, while also having fun and ensuring their safety.

Crafts

Children, especially small children, need to be moving and having something to do with their hands is a great way to use up that energy. Crafting can be super fun and it can be horse-related or you could even do crafts to then hang up in the tack room at the stables. Involving kids with the horses in this horse-friendly but safe activity can be a great way to amuse them.

Musical Poles

A very popular camp game, musical poles is a lot like musical chairs only with ground poles instead of chairs and the horse has to be standing over it, not the child. Basically when the music stops everyone’s horse has to have two hooves in front of the pole and two behind and the one who doesn’t is out. Kids find this game really fun and because it’s just walking around in a circle, it’s perfectly safe as well.

Obstacle Course

Sort of a more exciting version of musical poles, you can set up a simple obstacle course of sorts for the kids to walk the horses around. This can be over ground poles, around barrels, through cones, and it can all be done at a walk so there’s less potential for disaster or one of the small children getting hurt.

The best way to play this is to have some kind of prize at the end so it’s fun and competitive as well.

Egg and Spoon

Another kid favorite is to have the children on horses and walk around with an egg on a spoon and they have to keep it upright. If the children are comfortable you can go to a trot, which makes the game or challenging. This is always fun and at just a walk it can be really fun and not scary for small children who want to be around horses as well.

There are lots of activities out there for small children who want to play and be around horses and feel involved but without sticking them up on a horse and expecting them to go on a four hour trail ride! These activities are great fun for the family or for horse camps. Besides, anyone can play, which makes it fun for the whole barn.
